“These past 48 years of yoga has become the core of what I believe life to be. It is a fulfilling experience that has brought me closer to people, nature, and the divine. This path has literally saved my life, given me hope, and continues to guide me through the never-ending journey that has become a life full of love, peace, and happiness.”

Q: First, tell us a little about yourself.

Namaste. I began my yogic journey in 1979, at the delicate age of 23. I had back problems for many years, which come to find out via an x-ray at the age of 50, I was born with my left leg longer than the right. In fact, my whole left side of my body is longer, which explained all of my balancing and compensating issues throughout my childhood. During the Fall Quarter at college, a friend of mine gave me Richard Hittleman’s Yoga 28 Day Exercise Program Book claiming it would help me. The program changed my life. With this practice, I began to research yoga, its history and other ideologies, along with other poses. Because of my practice, I found my true self. I had freedom to discover my passions, and adopted life values that helped me through this world of confusion. If it weren’t for these discoveries, I would not have found my soulmate, love, happiness, contentment, peace, and balance of body and life. A few years back, my wife decided to take Rolf Gate’s YTT 200 course. She was so enthralled that she continued on and took his YTT 300. She began teaching studio classes, as well as me, and coaxed me into taking a YTT 200 course. At first, I was hesitant because I was 66 years old and content with going to classes. I am an excellent student. Nonetheless, my wife was persistent, and I took the plunge. I was interested more in the training and education, but at the end, I felt called to teach. I now teach a Yoga for Healthy Aging Class and coming into my own as an instructor. One never stops learning and I am able to learn along with my core students. This is very satisfying and hope to teach some Vinyasa Classes in the future. These past 48 years of yoga has become the core of what I believe life to be. It is a fulfilling experience that has brought me closer to people, nature, and the divine. This path has literally saved my life, given me hope, and continues to guide me through the never-ending journey that has become a life full of love, peace, and happiness.

Q:  What does yoga in action look like to you?

a beautiful forest, with an abundance of life, with a stream flowing into a lake, at the base of a towering mountain.

Q: What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting a yoga journey?

I would offer my journey as an example. I would encourage them to do the research, offer references/books, make myself available to answer any questions, offer them a free class, and let them decide for themselves.

Q: Tell us about the community you serve?

We are a small town that has a small yoga community. For the longest time, [my town] Sisters was without a yoga studio. One had to travel 20-plus miles to the nearest studio, of which many residents were not willing to pursue. Having our studio has become so important to the community. It has given everyone the chance, and incentive, to stay local and participate.

Q: The most meaningful part of my Yoga Alliance membership has been…

Events, CE workshops, credentials, a sense of community, and the wonder of it all.
